Our Roads are Still Neglected

Our Roads are Still Neglected

Our Roads are Still Neglected

After 30 years of 1/2% sales tax for local roads , Madera County is still in the bottom 5 for road quality out of 58 counties.

We are tired of our taxes being used to fund development projects while our existing roads are some of the worst in the state!

Same Players = Same Results

This 2024 Ballot Measure has serious flaws.

Why Were Measure T Funds Used to Replace a Good Bridge?

When asked, Supervisor Poythress Accused Sierra Citizens of Lying!

Supervisor Poythress claims the structurally deficient bridge was "repaired" But- oops wrong bridge

Supervisor Poythress claims the structurally deficient bridge was "repaired" But- oops wrong bridge

We looked it up and confirmed that Mr. Poythress is WRONG. Either the county replaced the wrong bridge, or Mr. Poythress thought he approved a different bridge repair and not a replacement?

We have until 2026 to get it right!

Letter to the editor - Why Vote NO

Sierra Citizens recommends a NO vote on Madera County's proposed Measure T. Why?

Because our decision makers can't be trusted.

In 2006, 18 years ago, promises were made about top priority projects. These included an

interchange (needed now more than ever) at Avenue 12 and Highway 41, widening Highway 41

the last mile or so into Oakhurst, and repaving Road 415. Elected officials, entrusted to fulfill

those promises, chose instead to allow other factors to influence their project selection decisions.

Projects not even on the 2006 list magically rose to the top.

Why did Measure T funds build a roundabout in North Fork?

At the total cost of $2.5 Million, with Measure T funds covering $1 Million of that, the

roundabout does not appear to have reduced accident rates (a typical metric). Not only do school

bus drivers dislike it immensely, but a local businessman, representing more than a hundred local

residents spoke against the project. It had not previously been identified as in need of

‘improvement’—but for some reason that rural location got a serious investment of our tax

dollars.

Why did Measure T funds rebuild the Fine Gold Creek Bridge?

For $18 million, decision makers opted to demolish a good bridge and put up a new one. And we

have 27 ‘structurally deficient’ bridges that have been ignored.   The former bridge had not been on the list of priority projects. (For that amount, we could have manned a fire station for roughly 10 years.)

It is time to remind our elected officials that they work for us.

Having roads that are among the worst 5 Counties in California is not acceptable. Rogue decision making by transportation board members, including three Madera County supervisors, can be brought under control with citizen advisers and board members.

It’s time for change on the transportation boards.

The current measure continues until March 2027. We can get it right in 2026.

We urge you to Vote No on Measure T 2024.

Sincerely,

Dan Metz

Dark Politics

The decision-makers fully expected the measure to fail using traditional processes, so they resorted to dark politics.

  • The Hired consultant  established a Political Action Committee (PAC) to fund a different initiative.
  • The Moving Madera Forward PAC was funded by a secretive Limited Liability Company (LLC) called FrontPoint Partners, managed by another LLC from Wyoming.
  • This consultant driven initiative is being funded by out of county and out of state donors hidden from Madera voters.

County refuses to allow meaningful community participation

  • The Steering Committee was not allowed to address, or discuss, the make-up of the decision-makers, to include ordinary citizens. This is a  core problem.
  • Alternate Committee Members were not permitted to attend meetings as observers for continuity of discussion and deliberation.
  • The Steering Committee  had NO INPUTs to the Ordinance or Ballot Language. Both were prepared 100% by staff. The consultant claims otherwise.
  •  Demand accountability and inclusion on how our taxes are spent.
  • Currently the cities of Madera and Chowchilla have a disproportionate advantage over our unincorporated areas, and we all see it in the lack of funding for our unincorporated area road needs.

Holes? What Holes?

Madera County's road quality is rated in the bottom 5 out of 58 Counties

After 30 years of 1/2% sales tax for local roads , Madera County is still in the bottom 5 for road quality out of 58 counties.

We cant keep doing things the same and expect different results!
